PROPOSALS for a luxury five star hotel and spa
development on the Hillhall Road have been welcomed by local
councillors.
Councillors agreed to support the project
after representatives from the Mooney Property Group attended
the Council's Planning Committee meeting last week, where they
outlined their plans for the complex which will include a five
star hotel in keeping with the linen theme of the area with 96
bedrooms in total and a spa featuring steam rooms, rock saunas,
ice rooms, relaxation areas, a gym and restaurant.
This follows suppont previously expressed by
the Council from a tourism perspective, which indicated that the
five-star development would service the top end of the local
market and play a role in encouraging international tourism to
Lisburn.
Speaking at the meeting, hotelier Arthur
Mooney thanked the Council for their support of the project. "It
gives us great pleasure to work with the council and we hope to
contribute to your vision for a five star spa and hotel, which
is unique not only to Lisburn but also to Northern Ireland' he
said.
The proposal is the latest in a serive of
planning applications and approvals for a range of hotels in the
City.
In addition to approvals for a luxury golf
resort and hotel at Hillsborough, applications for a country
house hotel at Eglantine, a hotel on the Moira Road and a
Premier Inn on the Hillsborough Road, Lisburn have all recently
been appnoved. The Planning Service is also considering another
application on the Hillsborough Road.
Chairman of the Council's Planning Committee,
Cllr William Leathem said: "The number of applications to
develop hotels in the City is an indication of the interest by
developers and it is hoped that construction work on at least
two of these projects will commence later this year."
