Donation of linens from famous shop

MANY skills of bygone days are just memories now so Lisburn Museum was pleased to accept a recent donation of embroidered linens and paper designs from the business of Kennedy s Embroidery Depot.

These were donated by Mrs Phyllis Douglas whose parents commenced a mail order business in Bellaghy, Co. Londonderry in the 1920s, retailing Irish linen embroidered table and supper cloths, sheets and pillowcases. The fine hand embroidery work was done by women and girls as outworkers. In 1936 the business moved to Bangor where a shop known as Irish Cottage Fine Art Industries was opened.

The premises remained in business until the early 1950's and many 'bottom drawer' and wedding gifts were bought from the Kennedys during the years their shop operated in the popular seaside town.

Final touches to restoration work

THE final touches are currently being put to the restoration of Castle Gardens.

The work has been much admired by people approaching Lisburn City Centre from the Union Bridge direction and the gardens are now open until 8.00pm.

Free guided tours are available on Thursday evenings between 6.00pm and 7.00pm. Places can be booked by contacting Museum reception staff.

People enjoying an earlier tour of Castle Garden

THE new 'Curator's Choice' exhibition at Lisburn Museum continues to attract a large number of visitors. It proved particularly popular with people visiting Northern Ireland over the St Patrick's Day and Easter holiday period.

Many were keen to win the Museum competition with its prize of a 25 voucher for

the shop in the complex. The March winner, who correctly identified the black and red colours of the hat worn by the Hillsborough warder in the painting in 'Curator's Choice' was Ruth Wallace, a pupil of Ballymena Academy.

The April competition question is 'What 17th century date is on the stonework above the East Gateway in Castle Gardens?'

Answers should be sent on a postcard to the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum, Market Square, Lisburn. BT2 8 1AG by Tuesday April 22.

Each postcard should include details of the sender's name, address and telephone number.

Just to make things even easier the answer is on the datestone above this gateway.
