Floral display marks Boys Brigade 125th anniversary

Pictured admiring the specially created Boys Brigade badge depicted in flowers and plants by Lisburn City Council's gardening team at the Hillsborough roundabout is (l-r) Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council's Environmental Services Committee; Mr Stewart Kirkwood, Boys Brigade; BB Members from the 5th Lisburn Company, Matthew Gifford, Callum McBride and Kyle McBride with Mr Peter McKechnie from 5th Lisburn BB and Councillor James Tinsley.

A SPECIAL floral display using 4000 plants has been created by Lisburn City Council to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Boys Brigade which will take place in October this year.

The Council's gardening team planted the 'badge' of the Boys Brigade, replicating the colours as faithfully as possible using Alternanthera plants (native to the Middle East and drier climates) at the Hillsborough roundabout.

Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council's Environmental Services Committee, official commended the display at a small gathering last week, saying, "The Boys Brigade play an important role in the development of boys and make a positive contribution to the Lisburn community.

On behalf of Lisburn City Council, I am delighted to be able to mark the 125th anniversary in such a manner and thank them for their contribution to this Borough. I wish the Boys Brigade every success for the future."

Mr Peter McKechnie from 5th Lisburn BB thanked Alderman Porter and the Council for the honour of the celebratory display "As an organisation we recognise that the influences surrounding our young people are not always helpful and that too many lose control at great cost to themselves, their families and the community" he said.

"The answer is to catch the energy and enthusiasm of youth and to channel it purposefully. We hope to continue to provide this facility to young people for many years to come. "
